Cleaning themselves is a typical activity of cats. Cats spend hours a day grooming and cleaning themselves.
But cleaning themselves continuously, without stopping, can be a sign of anxiety. Usually this continuous cleaning is limited to an area that the cat bites and licks without stopping. This behavior can even lead to problems of skin and fall of hair.
Try to calm the cat, giving him/her comfort and care. This is particularly indicated if that behavior was caused by a change in the routines of the cat.
If this behavior does not diminish, find a veterinarian who may prescribe tranquilizers or indicate a specialist in animal behavior.
